Hohenlohe Plain
The Hohenlohe Plain is part of the Neckar and Tauber Plateaus, which stretch from the High Rhine to the Tauber Valley. Located in the northeastern part of Baden-Württemberg, the Hohenlohe Plain encompasses the Hohenlohe district and the Schwäbisch Hall district. It is bordered to the north by the Bauland region, to the west by the Neckar Valley, to the south by the Swabian-Franconian Forest, and to the east by the Franconian Heights. The Kocher and Jagst rivers, along with their numerous tributaries and streams, traverse the plain. The landscape is characterized by a flat plain at an elevation of approximately 300-400 meters above sea level and by deeply incised river valleys (including those of the Kocher and Jagst). To the south, it is sharply defined by the Keuper hills (Waldenburg and Limpurg Hills), and to the east by the Franconian Heights. A good panoramic view of the Hohenlohe Plain can be enjoyed from Waldenburg (approximately 500 meters above sea level, the "Balcony of Hohenlohe"). The observation towers on the Einkorn hill near Schwäbisch Hall and the Burgberg hill near Frankenhardt also offer expansive views of the Hohenlohe Plain. Geology and Geomorphology: The Hohenlohe Plain is part of the Southwest German Scarplands and belongs to the Triassic landscape. An important component of these scarplands are the Gäu plains, to which the Hohenlohe Plain belongs. The Muschelkalk (shell limestone) layers form the bedrock and are covered over large areas by the Lettenkeuper (lead Keuper) layers and, in some places, by loess loam. The Tauber, Jagst, and Kocher rivers, along with their tributaries, have carved deep valleys into the mostly hard limestone and dolomite layers of the Muschelkalk, creating narrow valley sections. The varying resistance of the individual Keuper layers to erosion contributed to the formation of larger valley basins by the incising rivers (Crailsheim Basin, Vellberg Basin, Hall Basin, Michelbach Basin, Brettach Basin, and others). In the marginal zones of these bays, plains formed due to a galena deposit and the Corbula Bank (formerly called the Engelhof Plateau). Raw gypsum is mined here, particularly in the area around Schwäbisch Hall and Crailsheim. Shell limestone is extracted from numerous quarries and mostly processed into gravel. The Hohenlohe Plain is a sparsely wooded and fertile old agricultural region. The plateaus owe their fertility to the overlying Keuper marl layers and loess loams. It is the largest shell limestone karst region in Germany, with more than 2,000 sinkholes, numerous dry valleys, and isolated cave systems such as the Fuchslabyrinth near Schrozberg-Schmalfelden. The Hohenlohe climate is part of the cool-temperate Central European climate zone, still predominantly influenced by maritime factors. The varying altitudes result in localized temperature differences. The larger valleys of the Hohenlohe Plain are among the warmest areas in Baden-Württemberg. The summer warmth on the slopes allows for viticulture in the region. Rainfall increases with altitude. While the Tauberland region to the north, with 700 mm of annual precipitation, is among the drier areas, the high plateaus and the Keuper escarpment receive significantly more precipitation. In the highest elevations of the Keuper hills, rainfall can reach up to 1000 mm. In spring and autumn, valley fog often forms due to temperature inversions. The course of streams and rivers often follows the Variscan geological direction (SW-NE), as is the case, for example, with the lower reaches of the Kocher and Jagst rivers, or the almost perpendicular Hercynian direction (SE-NW), as is the case with the upper reaches of the Kocher, Jagst, and Tauber rivers. The side valleys of the rivers also adhere to these main axes, thus determining the orientation of the road network and settlement patterns in the area. Not only in the narrow Kocher Valley (with Künzelsau, Niedernhall, Ingelfingen, and Forchtenberg) are some towns occasionally affected by flooding in autumn and winter due to their location on the river. Settlement and Transportation: Hohenlohe and the Hohenlohe Plain are among the most sparsely populated areas in Germany. The districts of Hohenlohekreis, Schwäbisch Hall, and Main-Tauber-Kreis have an average population of only about 120 inhabitants per km² (Germany: 230 inhabitants per km²). The settlements are often situated in the deeply incised valleys, which also shaped the development of transportation. In the days of carriages and horse-drawn vehicles, transportation was severely hampered by the steep inclines. Later, state roads opened up the region, often following old trade routes across the plateaus and intersecting at hubs such as Heilbronn, Schwäbisch Hall, Crailsheim, Bad Mergentheim, and Tauberbischofsheim. The construction of several railway lines between 1860 and 1870 created other transport routes. Only the construction of the A6 motorway (completed in the early 1980s), which cuts through the Hohenlohe Plain from west to east and connects the Rhine Valley via Heilbronn to Nuremberg, overcame the natural obstacles. The 185-meter-high Kochertal Bridge was the highest motorway bridge in Europe until 2004 (completion of the Millau Viaduct). The Hohenlohe dialect is spoken only in the area around Künzelsau, Schwäbisch Hall, Bad Mergentheim, Öhringen, and Crailsheim. The dialect is a special variant of South Franconian (Heilbronn). To the north and east, it borders East Franconian (Würzburg, Nuremberg), and to the south, it borders Swabian. However, there are differences between the Hohenlohe dialect and Swabian. The flora and fauna of the Hohenlohe region are characterized by a rich biodiversity. Reasons for this include the different habitats and climatic differences in the region, as well as the fact that humans have not yet penetrated every corner of it.

Frank's Barn (approx. 500m from the holiday apartment): In 1993/1994, the town of Ilshofen converted the former stable and barn building, Frank's Barn in Ilshofen-Oberaspach, into a community center. The community center's hall can accommodate 30 to 300 people. Schwäbisch Hall Open-Air Theatre (approx. 15km from the holiday apartment): Professional open-air theatre on the steps of St. Michael's Church (market square). Hohenlohe Arena (approx. 6km from the holiday apartment): The striking circular hall with its large stable buildings is visible from afar, located directly at the Ilshofen/Kirchberg motorway exit. With 2,000 seats, the Hohenlohe Arena is the largest hall between Stuttgart and Nuremberg. Its large interior (20m x 40m) provides ample space for all types of events, including sporting events, concerts, theatre performances, and events such as annual general meetings or product presentations. Würth Art Gallery Schwäbisch Hall (approx. 15 km from the holiday apartment): While the residents of Schwäbisch Hall used to speak rather disparagingly of the small and long-neglected Katharinenvorstadt district, the Würth Art Gallery, built by the Gaisbach industrialist Reinhold Würth, cost around 20 million euros, was constructed. Here, the art patron presents the finest pieces from his internationally renowned collection. Wackershofen Open-Air Museum (approx. 18 km from the holiday apartment): A visit to the Hohenlohe Open-Air Museum is worthwhile if you want to leave the stress of everyday life behind and immerse yourself in a bygone era. Reubach Summer Theatre (approx. 20 km from the holiday apartment): In 1981, Dieter Kleinhanß, then the pastor in Reubach, wrote his first play. With "Robbers in the Parsonage," the local sports group gained their first theatrical experience at a community festival. The group truly began performing outdoors in 1993, thus giving birth to the Reubach Open-Air Theatre. Muswiese Rot am See (approx. 20 km from the holiday apartment): The Muswiese has been a large market for generations and continues to be of economic importance today. It also serves as a convenient shopping destination for tens of thousands of residents from hamlets, villages, and towns in the Hohenlohe region, as well as a worthwhile trade fair for merchants and craftspeople from the Franconia region. With its charm emanating from over 350 stalls and booths, it has retained its unique character, impressing visitors from near and far, for centuries and enjoys equal popularity as a meeting place for lively entertainment among young and old. Franconian Folk Festival (approx. 20 km from the holiday apartment): The Franconian Folk Festival was established in 1841 by King Wilhelm I of Württemberg on the occasion of his Silver Jubilee as an agricultural district festival to promote and advance agriculture in the Franconian-Hohenlohe region. The festival was originally organized by the Crailsheim Agricultural District Association, founded in 1841. Besides various amusements, animal and fruit judging and the parades were key components of the festival. Since 1901, the folk festival has been organized by the city of Crailsheim and has since been known as the Franconian Folk Festival. Leofels Castle Plays (approx. 8 km from the holiday apartment): The amateur actors of the Leofels Castle Plays have been successfully performing plays annually in the summer at the Leofels ruins near Ilshofen since 1985. Vellberg Wine Fountain Festival (approx. 8 km from the holiday apartment): The largest festival in Vellberg is the historical Wine Fountain Festival, held annually on the first weekend in July since 1968. The festival's centerpiece is the collection of the wine tithe from the lower-lying areas and the opening of the wine fountain by the herald. While the Wine Fountain Festival initially attracted around 5,000 visitors, the festival, celebrated in the small town of Vellberg, has since become a major tourist attraction in northern Württemberg and central Franconia. At times, it has drawn up to 20,000 visitors. Rothenburg ob der Tauber (approx. 30 km from the holiday apartment): As a world-renowned city, Rothenburg offers not only a unique historical ambiance and charming surroundings, but also an international crowd that reflects the city's cosmopolitan character. Langenburg Castle (approx. 18 km from the holiday apartment): High above the idyllic Jagst Valley in the Hohenlohe region lies Langenburg Castle. Originally built in the 13th century as a Staffordshire castle and transformed into a magnificent residence with a significant Renaissance courtyard in the 17th century through extensive construction, Langenburg Castle is considered one of the most beautiful castles in southern Germany. The wine fountain festival in Vellberg attracts thousands every year, who come to enjoy a fine wine from the Kochertal wineries in Niedernhall and Ingelfingen, or from the winegrowers in Michelbach am Wald and Pfedelbach. In the traditional wine taverns (Besenwirtschaften) around Öhringen, you can sample a Trollinger, Silvaner, or Lemberger from the Pfedelbach, Öhringen, Verrenberg, or Michelbach am Wald wine-growing regions with a simple snack. The cuisine in Hohenlohe also invites you to indulge in culinary delights. A particular regional specialty is the Hällisch-Fränkische Landschwein (Hall-Franconian Landrace pig). You can observe them in action at the open-air museum in Wackershofen, and they are also enjoyed in the many traditional restaurants throughout the region. The meat of the Hällisch-Fränkische Landschwein is now gaining increasing appreciation beyond the region. For other specialties such as Swabian-Hall roast pork, Hohenlohe beef from Hohenlohe pasture-raised cattle, or Hohenlohe Blootz (a type of flatbread), the innkeeper recommends a good Hohenlohe wine, a regional beer specialty, or simply a delicious Hohenlohe fruit juice. Hohenlohe Blootz is a flat cake. There are variations with plums, apples, or onions. The Hohenlohe region is known for its meat and sausage products from ethically raised animals, organic cheese specialties, dairy products, and organic baked goods. In the Brettach Valley, the Brettacher apple still ripens. This apple is juicy and very well-suited for making cider. Fine brandies and fruit spirits are also produced from this apple variety. At the Christmas markets in Franconian Hohenlohe, the typical Franconian white mulled wine is always served. Hohenlohe Regional Market (only 5km from the holiday apartment): The Hohenlohe Regional Market is designed as a rural market center with a 950 m² market hall offering the full range of regionally produced food, with over 4000 locally sourced items. It also features a newly designed restaurant specializing in "Mohrenköpfle" (a type of chocolate-covered marshmallow treat) featuring Swabian-Hall pork. "Schlachtplatt' mit Kraut und Schbatzâ von Hand, geit's im Hohâloher Land" (a traditional German dish of various meats, including sauerkraut and pork knuckle), as the Hohenlohe dialect band Annâweech sings in their regional anthem, celebrating the food of this rural and fertile region, which even during wartime didn't have to skimp on food. The innkeepers helped themselves to produce from the large gardens of the expansive fields, while families used the small gardens on their own properties. And if an ingredient was needed, they helped each other out. This sense of community continued even in the form of old family recipes, which can still be ordered in restaurants and pubs throughout the country today. Truly "food like at home!" Many establishments have made "home cooking" their specialty: from hearty, traditional fare served lavishly on large plates to exquisite bite-sized versions. And so on and so forth...
